Parliament Deputy Speaker Mohamed Mohamed Abou El-Enein said Egypt has managed to diversify its energy resources engaging both renewable and regular energy.

Speaking during a session held as part of the World Youth Forum under the title “Energy Pathways: Towards a Safer World”, the Parliament deputy speaker said the renewable energy accounts for 20 per cent of the national power grid.

Abou El-Enein said the the WYF, currently in session, discusses key issues facing the entire world amid the coronavirus pandemic, expressing hope that the forum would come up with strong recommendations.

The parliament deputy speaker said the WYF tackled the impacts of the coronavirus topic and the climate change issue over the past two days, and today it takes up the energy issue, adding that the three issues are inseparable.

He noted that the world countries seek to compensate for the shortfall in their energy use via many ways, and in light of the scientific and technological progress the entire world started shifting to the renewable and clean energy.

The past year recorded the highest rate of environmental pollution in the history because of the major industrial countries, he said, adding that pressure increased on the governments, pushing them to raise the costs of electricity.

He pointed out to the recent gas discoveries in Egypt, saying that natural gas helped Egypt shape its relations and borders with its neighboring countries.

Egypt succeeded in luring massive investments which benefited the domestic market and the entire region, he said.

He added that Africa could act as a power warehouse to supply the world with renewable energy, noting that the African countries enjoy 4,000 solar hours, an advantage that is not owned by other countries.
