The European Union Delegation in Egypt on Monday organised a Nile clean-up event at Qursaya Island in Giza.

The event was part of EU initiatives during EU Climate Diplomacy Weeks in 2021.

‘Clean the Nile’ concludes a series of activities organised by the delegation to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on Luxor, Alexandria and Aswan.
Ambassador Christian Berger, head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt said climate change is one the biggest perils to this planet and to our existence.
“There is no Planet B. Together, we remain united for climate,” he said.

“We need to join our forces and resources and work together to counter climate change. EU members are stepping up climate action worldwide,” he added.
“Fighting plastic pollution is at the heart of the EU Green Deal. Every year, thousands of tons of plastic enter the Nile and reach the Mediterranean Sea, increasing the amount of plastic in the sea day after day,” he said.

Berger pointed out that plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental issues of our time and has a direct effect on our economy and our health.
“We are proud to collaborate with Very Nile and contribute to the reduction of plastic waste. This is a drop in the ocean but an important cleaning drop,” he added.
Berger told The Egyptian Gazette the EU is giving top priority to the environment.

‘Clean the Nile’ event was co-organised with Very Nile, which raises awareness of environmental issues, ultimately instilling eco-friendly behaviour in individuals, communities, and institutions.

EU Climate Diplomacy weeks offer innovative solutions to conserve the environment and reduce sea- and river pollution by empowering local communities to become key actors in improving the environment and raising their quality of life.
