The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted an Egyptian-led resolution on Friday during its 69th General Conference. The resolution, which focuses on applying IAEA safeguards in the Middle East, passed with overwhelming support, as 120 countries voted in favor. This result highlights significant international backing for the resolution’s objectives.

The resolution calls for all nuclear facilities in the Middle East to be subject to the IAEA’s safeguards system without exception. It also urges all nations in the region to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East.

This resolution is a result of Egypt’s ongoing efforts to achieve disarmament and prevent nuclear proliferation, particularly in the Middle East. It aims to push for the universality of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the region. The move also calls on the international community to fulfill its legal obligations under the NPT.

IAEA is the world’s central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the nuclear field. It works for the safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, contributing to international peace and security and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
