The 70th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has adopted, by an overwhelming majority, an annual resolution submitted by Egypt on the application of IAEA safeguards to all nuclear facilities in the Middle East.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates said the resolution received the support of 112 countries, with no votes cast against it.
The ministry said the outcome reflects Cairo’s standing within international organisations and underscores the consistency of its efforts to promote security and stability across the region.
Egypt’s position calls for the application of the IAEA safeguards system to all countries in the Middle East and to all their nuclear facilities without exception. It also advocates the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, as well as universal adherence to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
Egypt reaffirmed the pivotal role of the NPT in maintaining and strengthening international peace and security since its entry into force, stressing the need for the international community to fulfil its responsibilities and fully implement all legal obligations arising from the treaty.
The country also called for intensified international efforts to overcome the impasse hindering the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.
Against this backdrop, Egypt said the seventh session of the UN Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, scheduled to be held at UN headquarters in New York in November 2026, presents an opportunity for all countries in the region to engage in serious and constructive dialogue and join the NPT.
Egypt added that such engagement would support international efforts to achieve universal adherence to the treaty and advance the establishment of a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction.
