Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli chaired a meeting on Sunday in New Alamein to follow up on the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants, stressing the importance of ensuring efficiency, sustainability and compliance with environmental standards. He said the sector is a strategic pillar of Egypt’s infrastructure development and a key element in improving sanitation services nationwide in line with Egypt Vision 2030.

Government spokesperson Mohamed El-Homsany reported that the meeting reviewed the operational status of several plants, current performance levels and maintenance plans, alongside challenges and proposed measures to raise efficiency. Discussions also covered ways to enhance coordination among agencies, secure technical and financial needs, and maximise the use of treated water in development projects to support sustainable water management.

The meeting highlighted ongoing efforts by ministries and relevant bodies to monitor wastewater treatment operations, in line with presidential directives to optimise infrastructure, protect the environment and back comprehensive development plans.

The prime minister instructed continued coordination among ministries to ensure the best economic and environmental outcomes from wastewater projects. Housing Minister Randa El-Menshawy presented a report on major plants, including Abu Rawash in Giza with a capacity of 1.6 million cubic metres per day, East Alexandria with 800,000 cubic metres per day, and Gabal El-Asfar in Qalyubia with 2.5 million cubic metres per day, underscoring their importance in serving large populations.
