Egypt’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid announced Sunday that the opening session of the 27th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) witnessed the adoption of the agenda for the session.

In a statement, the spokesman said the agenda included many items on the adaptation to climate change and mitigating its negative repercussions and ways to provide climate finance. The agenda, for the first time, included an item on addressing losses and damage caused by climate change, he said.

The COP27 opening session witnessed the election of Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry as chairman of the session, taking over the presidency from Alok Sharma, the President of the 26th session of the Conference.

Shoukry stressed that Egypt will spare no effort to achieve the goals of the conference and will work to provide all conditions for its success and to ensure that it yields the desired results. The conference represents an opportunity for all the parties concerned to confirm their political will to face challenges arising from climate change, he said.

In the midst of the current international tensions that have cast a shadow over everyone and resulted in crises in food and energy supplies, Shoukry asserted that the time has come for all the parties concerned with international climate action to move from the stage of negotiations and pledges to implementation.

The opening session was held Sunday with the participation of delegations of states parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and representatives of many parties concerned with international climate action.
