Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty held talks on Wednesday with Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
During the meeting, the two sides welcomed the strong momentum in Egyptian-Qatari relations and continued coordination and consultation on regional issues, reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties and broadening co-operation.
They stressed the importance of ensuring the regular convening of bilateral mechanisms, particularly the Egyptian-Qatari Higher Committee, and of implementing its agreed outcomes, programmes and projects.
They also underscored the need to advance the legal frameworks and agreements governing co-operation, especially in trade, economic and investment fields.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Nader Zaki said the discussions also covered regional developments and efforts to contain tensions and promote de-escalation.
For his part, Minister Abdelatty stressed the need to prioritise political and diplomatic solutions and reiterated Egypt’s categorical rejection of any aggression against Gulf states or threats to their security and stability, which Egypt regards as integral to its own national security.
He also emphasised the importance of safeguarding the security, safety and freedom of navigation, and Egypt’s absolute rejection of using straits and maritime passages as instruments of pressure or blackmail in violation of international law.
The meeting also addressed developments concerning the Palestinian cause.
In this respect, both sides stressed the need for sustained, intensive coordination with the United States and regional partners to ensure implementation of the US President’s peace plan for Gaza, facilitate humanitarian aid and launch reconstruction efforts.
They rejected any plans to displace Palestinians and reaffirmed the necessity of establishing a Palestinian state along the 4 June 1967 borders.
The two officials further exchanged views on Sudan, Yemen and the Horn of Africa.
Minister Abdelatty stressed the importance of preserving Sudan’s security, stability, unity and national institutions, while supporting a resolution that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
