Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat Saturday headed to the UAE to take part in the 15th session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).

During his participation in the two events, the minister will discuss ways to enhance cooperation and activate partnership among IRENA member states along with exchanging know-how in the domains of new and renewable energies and their energy storage systems, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy on Saturday.

Esmat will highlight Egypt’s vision and strategy for sustainable development, reliance on clean energy, reducing dependency on fossil fuel and mitigating carbon emissions, in cooperation and partnership with the private sector.

The minister is scheduled to participate in the ministerial round-table meetings on accelerating the energy transition in Africa, which aim to formulate a green manufacturing agenda and increase financing to support the transition in emerging markets and developing economies.

Esmat is set to hold one-on-one meetings with IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera and the director of infrastructure at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The 15th Assembly of IRENA kicks off Saturday and runs till Monday in Abu Dhabi, the UAE, under the theme of “Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition – The Way Forward” (Energy security, Socio-economic development and Financing options).

The IRENA Assembly will kick off the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), which is due to take place between January 12-18.

Egypt is a founding member of the IRENA, a lead global intergovernmental agency for energy transformation that serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, supports countries in their energy transitions, and provides state of the art data and analyses on technology, innovation, policy, finance and investment.

IRENA drives the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy, including bioenergy and geothermal, hydropower, ocean, solar and wind energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, and energy security, for economic and social resilience and prosperity and a climate-proof future.
