Developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and the ongoing efforts to advance the implementation of the peace plan were at the core of discussions which Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation, and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty held with Palestinian Vice President Hussein Al-Sheikh in Alamein late on Monday.

The meeting, which was attended by Palestinian National Council President Rawhi Fattouh and Fatah movement Central Committee member Majed Faraj, is part of the ongoing Egyptian-Palestinian consultations on the Palestinian cause and efforts to support the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

The talks focused on the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip amid what Abdelatty described as inhumane Israeli practices.

The minister stressed the need for the international community to pressure Israel to fulfil its commitments under US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, including ensuring the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid and the Israeli withdrawals from Gaza to pave the way for the Palestinian Authority to resume its full responsibilities there.

The meeting also addressed the escalating tensions in the West Bank, including systematic settler attacks, continued illegal settlement activity and violations of Christian and Muslim holy sites in East Jerusalem.

Minister Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s categorical rejection of all Israeli measures aimed at imposing a new reality on the ground or undermining the territorial unity of the Palestinian territories.

He underlined the need to preserve the unity of Gaza and the West Bank and create a credible political horizon leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The talks also touched on Palestinian reconciliation, efforts to restore unity and the ongoing political reforms.

For his part, Al-Sheikh praised Egypt’s pivotal role in supporting the Palestinian cause and expressed his commitment to continued close coordination with Cairo.
