Egyptian Petroleum Minister Tareq Mulla had talks with Japanese Ambassador to Egypt Oka Hiroshi on means of promoting bilateral co-operation in the petroleum and clean energy and cutting greenhouses gas emissions in view of Japanese companies’ deep interest in these domains.
The talks also tackled Egypt’s preparations for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) due to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, the Petroleum Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
Mulla underlined the importance of continued co-operation between the petroleum sector and Japanese companies, especially in the field of modern technology in oil and natural gas industry.
He said efforts are underway to prepare a roadmap to establish a system for energy efficiency in the petroleum sector in tandem with Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and the European Union (EU).
He referred to efforts to assess opportunities for producing blue ammonia in Egypt in light of a memorandum of understanding which has been recently inked between EGAS, the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM) and Toyota.
Mulla underlined that Egypt is proceeding with expanding the use of natural gas as a transition to eco-friendly fuel, noting that efforts are underway to prepare a strategy to use hydrogen as clean fuel in partnership with the ministries concerned.
He also referred to an initiative that has recently been launched by the East Mediterranean Gas Forum to use liquefied natural gas as ship fuel in lieu of traditional fuel.
He noted that there are distinguished investment opportunities in the petroleum sector.
For his part, the Japanese ambassador underlined the importance of co-operation between the producing and consuming countries to achieve a balance in prices.
He highlighted the depth of the Egyptian-Japanese ties in various energy domains, noting that Egypt has become an investment destination for many international companies, especially in view of the successes achieved recently.
