Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdel-Aati, met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi in El Alamein on Thursday during Grossi’s visit to attend the installation ceremony of the reactor pressure vessel for Unit 2 of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant.

Abdel-Aati praised the close cooperation between Egypt and the IAEA, describing Grossi’s participation in the ceremony as a reflection of the strong partnership supporting Egypt’s peaceful nuclear programme.

He said the El Dabaa project is a strategic national undertaking that will diversify Egypt’s energy mix, expand clean energy production and contribute to sustainable development.

The minister also expressed appreciation for the IAEA’s technical assistance, including support for the El Dabaa project, research reactors, workforce development and the strengthening of Egypt’s nuclear institutions.

Abdel-Aati reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the IAEA’s role in implementing safeguards under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and stressed the importance of strengthening the treaty as the cornerstone of the global non-proliferation regime.

The two sides also discussed regional developments.

Abdel-Aati reviewed Egypt’s diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and promote political solutions, highlighting the importance of building on the recent U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding to revive negotiations and achieve a lasting diplomatic settlement.

Grossi commended Egypt’s progress on the El Dabaa project and praised Cairo’s role in promoting regional security and de-escalation through diplomacy.
