Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, discussed with Rawad Halabi, Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) office in Cairo, ways to strengthen co-operation and review the progress of joint development projects implemented in several governorates.

During the meeting, Farouk highlighted the long-standing partnership between Egypt and the World Food Programme, describing the UN agency as a strategic partner in supporting food security.

The meeting reviewed several ongoing projects carried out in co-operation between the Ministry and the WFP.

Farouk noted that the Ministry’s current priority is to improve the income of smallholder farmers by encouraging the adoption of modern agricultural practices that help increase productivity.

He also stressed the importance of developing supply chains and providing technical support to farmers.

Farouk added that the Ministry is working to promote economic empowerment in rural areas, with a special focus on women and youth. Several successful initiatives were discussed, including projects aimed at strengthening the ability of small farmers to cope with the impacts of climate change, as well as expanding the use of solar-powered systems in agriculture.

For her part, Halabi praised the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and reaffirmed the WFP’s commitment to strengthening co-operation with Egypt in the coming period.

She said the WFP is looking to expand joint work to include projects focused on agricultural innovation, the use of digital technologies in agricultural extension, and climate change adaptation to help farmers address environmental challenges.
