The Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Ahmed Rostom, met on Wednesday with Noufel Telahigue, Regional Director for the Near East, North Africa, Europe and Central Asia at the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), to discuss expanding cooperation in food security projects and support for small farmers.

The talks focused on broadening partnership programmes to empower small-scale producers, create jobs and promote agricultural entrepreneurship, in line with the government’s economic development priorities.

Rostom welcomed the IFAD delegation and reaffirmed Egypt’s appreciation for its long-standing partnership with the Fund. He said the government is keen to further develop co-operation in line with the national economic and social development plan and the broader sustainable development framework.

He stressed that agriculture remains a key pillar of the national economy.

The sector plays a central role in supporting GDP, generating employment and strengthening food security.

He noted the state’s commitment to supporting farmers and small producers amid ongoing global challenges. The minister said the ministry is working to direct public investments efficiently toward priority sectors, particularly food security.

He highlighted the importance of impact evaluation mechanisms to ensure tangible development results. He also emphasised close coordination among the ministries of planning, agriculture, foreign affairs and international cooperation, as well as development partners, to maximise returns from joint programmes.

Both sides discussed food security as a presidential priority during the current phase.

They reviewed plans to improve strategic planning for agricultural projects and link financing to development priorities. Talks also covered expanding programmes for small farmers, strengthening agricultural entrepreneurship among young producers and improving resource efficiency to ensure sustainable outcomes.

Rostom noted that the Decent Life rural development initiative remains central to efforts to upgrade villages and support small farmers.

He said the ministry’s new vision aims to shift beneficiaries from direct support to economic empowerment by linking farmers to food processing value chains.
