Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat had talks with Liu Zhenya, the Chairman of the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), on means of expanding global power interconnection projects to meet electricity demand through clean energy sources, while aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of Esmat’s participation in the Shanghai Conference on Renewable Energy, Clean Energy Solutions, and Energy Transition in China.

During the meeting, they explored ways to enhance cooperation and partnership in optimizing renewable energy use, improving energy efficiency, and supporting electricity interconnection projects.

The minister discussed with the GEIDCO’s delegation the organization’s vital role in enhancing global power interconnection, supporting smart grids as well as promoting training and capacity building in developing countries, and fostering use of renewable energy.

The talks talks also tackled ambitious plans to connect electricity networks across Asia, Africa, and Europe.

They also addressed establishing an alliance for electricity interconnection and sustainable development in Africa.

The talks also covered transferring expertise in the field of energy storage, strengthening cross-continental infrastructure, accelerating clean energy distribution projects, and promoting joint development.

Esmat emphasized that interconnection projects with neighboring countries are a key pillar of Egypt’s strategy to support its power grid and position the country as a regional energy hub—connecting energy markets across Africa, Europe, and Asia.
