Egypt has extended the deadline for submitting property tax returns until the end of September, giving taxpayers additional time to benefit from a package of incentives and simplified procedures, Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk announced on Tuesday.
Kouchouk said the extension will allow more citizens to take advantage of services that will be available through a mobile application currently being developed based on users’ feedback.
The incentives include a 25% discount on property tax due for residential units and a 10% discount for non-residential properties. Taxpayers who make advance payments ranging from EGP 200 to EGP 1,000, depending on the property type, will also receive an additional 5% discount.
The minister added that late-payment charges will be waived for taxpayers who settle the principal amount of their property tax debt by October 2.
He also reaffirmed that a family’s primary residence is exempt from property tax if its value is less than EGP 8 million, with exemption requests to be submitted electronically alongside the tax return.
For the first time, owners of multiple properties will be allowed to file a single property tax return, while electronic payment receipts will also be officially recognized.
Kouchouk said the measures are aimed at simplifying procedures, reducing taxpayers’ administrative burdens and encouraging voluntary tax compliance, stressing that the success of tax reform depends on building trust and making compliance easier for citizens.
