Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aati met African Union Commission Chairman Mahmoud Ali Youssouf on Friday to discuss ways of strengthening cooperation and joint African action, the foreign ministry said.

The meeting took place in Kampala on the sidelines of an extraordinary summit of countries contributing troops to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia. Abdel-Aati was attending the summit on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

The two officials exchanged views on developments across Africa, particularly in Somalia, as well as efforts to support reconstruction and development in post-conflict countries, the ministry said.

They also discussed preparations for the African Union’s mid-year co-ordination summit, scheduled to be held in the Egyptian coastal city of El Alamein on October 4, 2026. It will be preceded by the El Alamein African Business Summit, held every two years under an AU decision adopted in February 2026.

The talks also covered developments in Sudan, Somalia and the Horn of Africa.

Abdel-Aati stressed Egypt’s support for national state institutions and the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the region, while rejecting unilateral measures that could undermine state sovereignty or regional stability.

Youssouf praised Egypt’s role within the African Union and its efforts to support the continent’s causes and defend its interests, expressing the commission’s commitment to continued coordination with Cairo to promote peace, security, stability and development.
