Egypt’s Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk has reaffirmed that the state is pressing ahead with efforts to improve energy efficiency across the national economy and expand the use of new and renewable energy sources, as part of a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and enhance sustainable growth.

Speaking during a roundtable discussion on “Working to Reduce Carbon Emissions” at Chapter Zero Egypt, the minister highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening the competitiveness of productive, industrial, and export sectors, noting that improving energy efficiency remains a key pillar in achieving this objective, according to a ministry press release on Thursday.

The government is accelerating the transition to renewable energy through robust partnerships with local and international business communities, he added.

Kouchouk further underscored ongoing efforts to advance the peaceful use of nuclear energy by expediting work on the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, alongside increasing public investments to expand the capacity of electricity transmission and distribution networks, thereby maximising the benefits of diversified energy sources, the ministry said in a statement.

He noted that the government is working collectively to introduce additional incentives to support the transition to clean energy, with upcoming budgets set to maintain programmes that back productive and export-oriented sectors.

The minister also stressed that decisive measures have been taken to rationalise energy consumption within government entities and promote more efficient transportation systems, it added.

Kouchouk expressed appreciation for the business community’s confidence in recent financial and tax reforms, affirming the government’s commitment to continuing these reforms to ease burdens on partners and broaden the economic and tax base.

For his part, Ahmed El Sewedy, Chairman and Founding Member of Chapter Zero Egypt, emphasised the importance of transforming emissions reduction into a driver of growth, innovation, and investment.

CEO and Founding Member Ayman Salah highlighted the opportunity to strengthen economic resilience and enhance Egypt’s position within the global low-carbon economy through proactive adaptation to evolving climate-related policies.

Chapter Zero Egypt is a platform that brings together business leaders and stakeholders to advance climate action and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.

It aims to position emissions reduction not only as an environmental responsibility, but also as a driver of economic growth, innovation, and investment attraction.
