Local Development Minister Hisham Amna said on Monday that the Decent Life presidential initiative is the kiss of life for people in the Egyptian countryside as it aims to improve their lives for the better in the targeted villages.

The minister’s remarks came as he received yesterday the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Egypt Elena Panova at the ministry’s headquarters, the Local Development Ministry said in a statement.

Attending the meeting were Assistant Minister of Local Development for National Projects Hisham Al-Helbawy, Advisor to the Minister for International Co-operation Ambassador Mohamed Hegazy and Director of the Central Unit of the Presidential Initiative Decent Life Walaa Gad Al-Karim.

In remarks during the meeting, Amna said that the presidential initiative aims to bring about a comprehensive change in the lives of countryside dwellers who account for more than 56 per cent of Egypt’s population.

The minister also explained that the initiative seeks to improve the social, economic and environmental aspects of life in the countryside through eradicating poverty, elevating citizen health standards and upgrading basic services, thereby promoting sustainable development.

The projects of the Egyptian Rural Development Programme, he added, include all service areas of interest to citizens, namely sanitation and drinking water, gas, communications, electricity and roads in addition to social service facilities namely health units, schools and youth facilities.
