Earlier today, Egypt’s Cabinet announced that initial investigations conducted by the relevant authorities into the fire that broke out aboard two ships at Damietta Port on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 indicate that the incident was caused by a drone attack.

The fire had been fully contained and noted that no party has claimed responsibility for the incident, statement confirmed.

Damietta Port is one of Egypt’s most important commercial ports and a key hub in the maritime transport and logistics system. It receives considerable attention as part of the state’s plan to develop Egyptian ports and transform Egypt into a regional hub for transportation, logistics, and transit trade. This is being achieved through projects to develop and expand berths and terminals, enhance infrastructure efficiency, and modernise operating systems and the services provided.
