Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel el-Wazir Monday inspected implementation rate progress of the second phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project and the development of the Greater Cairo Ring Road.

The minister was accompanied by Deputy Minister of Transport for Land Transport Magdy Abdel Hamid, Chairman of the General Authority for Roads, Bridges and Land Transport Tarek Abdel Gawad, along with senior officials from the Authority and heads of the executing companies.

During the tour, Wazir reviewed progress rates of phase II of the BRT project, which extends from El Mosheer Tantawy station to the Fayoum interchange over a length of 57 kilometers and includes 21 stations, out of a total of 48 stations across the project’s three phases.

The phase includes 10 at-grade stations with pedestrian bridges, five at-grade stations with pedestrian tunnels, and six non-standard stations.

Phase II stations also include three stations along the Maryoutiya-Haram, King Faisal, and Tersa-as well as the Grand Egyptian Museum station on the Cairo–Alexandria desert road.

The minister got first hand information about the integration between BRT stations and the bus terminals located beneath the Ring Road that serve passengers traveling to and from the Ring Road, as well as passenger access to stations via pedestrian bridges or tunnels. In addition, station waiting areas, ticketing systems and passage through electronic gates were showcased.

Wazir stressed the importance of accelerating the completion of Phase II of the BRT project.

The project comes in line with the Ministry of Transport’s plan to maximize the use of mass transit and reduce reliance on private vehicles, contributing to time and cost savings, environmental preservation, and improved traffic flow, the minister said.

He added that the project provides the highest levels of service to citizens through a modern fleet of locally manufactured, environmentally friendly electric buses.

The BRT also connects major interchanges along the Ring Road, such as the Suez, Adly Mansour, El-Marg and Mostorod interchanges.

Meantime, Wazir inspected implementation rate of the surface-level service road, with a width of 10 meters, surrounding the Ring Road from both the inner and outer sides.
