Egyptian-Ghanaian relations are distinguished by their historical depth and mutual respect in light of genuine political will of both countries to open up new horizons for co-operation in diverse domains.
Ghanaian Ambassador in Cairo Obed Boamah Akwa yesterday visited The Egyptian Gazette, where he met with Editor-in-Chief Mohamed Fahmy to discuss bilateral ties and the role of the media in supporting development agendas on the African continent.
Ambassador Akwa expressed his happiness for being his country’s envoy here.
“When I was nominated to become an ambassador to Egypt, I said, thank God. It is a dream for many people. No other country like Egypt,” he said.
The ambassador went on to say that Egypt’s rich history gives both hope and reassurance.
“Those who created great civilisation thousands of years ago can do the same now,” he added.
COP27, which will be hosted in Sharm el-Sheikh this November, will be a tremendous success thanks to Egypt’s unique capabilities, the envoy said, noting that African ambassadors here in Egypt met recently to prepare for the event.
“COP27 will be a great chance to articulate common position of Africa in climate change file. Ghana will actively participate in the conference in the presence of Ghana’s president and high-level delegation including ministers and experts,” he said.
Egypt, Ghana and other African countries will be beneficiaries of this conference, he said.
“There will be more follow-up meetings for ambassadors in the upcoming period as we get closer to the event. I am absolutely optimistic,” he noted.
The ambassador also referred to youth participation in COP27, adding that this file is to be tackled through continental approach and common voice. “Youth will speak for Africa,” he said.
The Ghanaian envoy also hailed bilateral relations between Egypt and Ghana, describing them as “fantastic”.
In this regard, he referred to Egypt’s support for Ghana’s hosting of the headquarters of the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
“This will have a positive impact on economic integration and developing intra-regional trade in light of great potentials of this area,” he said.
The ambassador also referred to the role of the media.
“Without media, facts are silent. Nobody knows about it. Consequently, no action can be taken. Media helps you articulate your vision to ensure common understanding.
