NEW YORK – Tunisia’s delegate to the United Nations Security Council Tariq al Adab stressed the urgent need for reaching a coordination and co-operation mechanism among the countries concerned with the issue of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the exploitation of water resources and the settlement of differences that may arise in this framework, in a manner that guarantees the rights of the upstream country without harming the rights and interests of the downstream ones.
In a UNSC session, held on Thursday at the request of Egypt and Sudan and with the participation of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry to discuss the Ethiopian dam issue, the Tunisian diplomat said that the Nile River represents a common resource that is vital for the livelihood and development of the peoples of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia.
The Tunisian representative said he does not believe that achieving this equation is “impossible”, if there is a political will by the three countries to resolve outstanding legal and technical issues, refrain from unilateral measures that can only complicate the problem, and continue negotiations in a constructive manner, under the auspices of the African Union in order to reach an agreement within a reasonable period of time, based on common interests and benefits.
This establishes a new and promising phase of constructive cooperation and partnership as agreed upon during the extraordinary meeting of the Bureau of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union, held on July 21, 2020 and in line with the Declaration of Principles of 2015, he said
