Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Thursday telephoned his Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen to congratulate him on the new post.

Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid said Shoukry told Cohen that Egypt hopes to boost bilateral ties and strengthen coordination on different issues of common concern.

The top Egyptian diplomat stressed the importance of resuming the peace talks between the Palestinians and Israelis as soon as possible, for being the only and best way to achieve the principle of a two-state solution that could lead to establishing an independent Palestinian state and bringing about regional stability and peace, the spokesman added.

Shoukry underlined Egypt will always assume its historic role in backing peace efforts to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which requires ceasing unilateral measures that could complicate the situation, while preserving the existing legal and historical status in East Jerusalem.

Shoukry also emphasised Egypt will continue its efforts to maintain the truce between the Palestinians and Israelis, the spokesman noted.

The two foreign ministers affirmed they will maintain consultations in the coming phase.
