CAIRO – Egypt’s Youth and Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhi congratulated Egyptian weightlifters for gaining medals at the 2022 Junior World Weightlifting Championships after a two-year ban.

Neamat Saeed Fahmy clinched gold and silver medals in the 71-kg category, while Mahmoud Hosni el Sayed won two silver medals in the 81-kg category at the tournament currently being hosted by Greece.

Egypt is reaping the fruits of the national project for talents and Olympic champions, the minister said.

In September 2019, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) suspended Egypt from international competitions over doping offences committed during the 2016 African Championships and the 2019 All-African Games.

The ban took effect on 9 September 2019 and ended on 9 September 2021.

Egypt missed last summer’s Tokyo Olympic Games but the country’s weightlifters have a chance to redeem themselves in the World Championships.
