A human rights delegation yesterday visited Wadi Natroun Jail to check on the status of the inmates.

The delegation comprises representatives of 27 international newspapers and news agencies, who are seeking to get firsthand information about conditions of inmates.

It is one of several visits approved by Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfiq to get human rights delegations better acquainted with the care provided to the prisoners, Assistant Interior Minister for the Prisons Department Maj Gen Tareq Marzouq said yesterday.

Such visits reflect the Interior Ministry’s strategy, which is based on transparency and openness, Marzouq noted.

The members of delegation were allowed to see for themselves a correct picture of the situation inside prisons, which refutes false claims promoted by the forces of evil against Egypt, he further said.

The delegation inspected all facilities of the prison and met with some inmates. All precautionary measures against Covid-19 were taken during prisoners’ visits.

The delegation also met a group of prisoners as they played football in the courtyard and made sure inmates are exercising their natural right to practise sports twice a week.

Members of the delegation also visited the prison’s library, kitchen and bakery, as well as the hospital, where all medical equipment and medicines are secured in addition to an operations room and outpatient clinics.
