At least 21 people died when a boat carrying migrants sank off Senegal’s coast, the interior ministry said Sunday.
One survivor had been rescued and 21 bodies recovered by Saturday evening, the ministry said in a statement on X.
The accident happened off Kebemer, about 180 kilometres (110 miles) north of the capital Dakar. Search and rescue operations were continuing for possible survivors.
The boat was carrying people seeking to migrate irregularly, the ministry said, without specifying how many were on board.
Thousands of people have died in recent years attempting to reach Spain’s Canary Islands from West Africa, including 635 in the first five months of this year, according to migrant rights group Walking Borders.
