Egyptian Court of Cassation Vice-President Counselor Adel Maged is participating in the largest forum on internet governance and artificial intelligence (AI) in Africa, which opened on Monday in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, and will run for four consecutive days.
The forum is organised by the Secretariat of the African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) in co-operation with the African Union Commission and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), with representatives from all African countries in attendance.
The United Nations selected Maged as the only Arab judge representing North Africa to take part in Africa’s first dialogue on the use of artificial intelligence in the judiciary.
The selection follows his contribution to securing the establishment of the first independent judicial track in the forum’s history, dating back to its establishment in 2006, during his remarks at the closing ceremony of last year’s United Nations Internet Governance Forum, held in Norway.
During the forum, Maged is set to address several issues reflecting the interests of developing countries, including digital sovereignty and strengthening African countries’ participation in international efforts to govern artificial intelligence.
He will also introduce the concept of “judicial digital sovereignty” at the forum for the first time.
In addition, he will deliver a keynote address at a special session on “Regulating the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Judiciary in Accordance with the Principles of the Rule of Law.”
