Egypt is expanding the use of advanced technologies and locally manufactured equipment to improve water and wastewater services, reduce water loss and enhance the sustainability of its infrastructure.

Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Randa el-Menshawy and Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Swailem highlighted these priorities during a tour of the fifth International Water, Wastewater, Desalination and Waste Treatment Exhibition and Conference (IWWI 2026) at the Cairo International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Nasr City on Tuesday.

The two ministers reviewed modern technologies for detecting water leaks, monitoring water flows, treating wastewater and managing sewage sludge. They also explored opportunities to expand local manufacturing and strengthen partnerships with international companies.

El-Menshawy said the exhibition provided an important platform for co-operation between government bodies and Egyptian and international companies.

She stressed the need to adopt innovative technologies to improve the operation and maintenance of water facilities.

During their visit to the German pavilion, the two ministers reviewed technologies developed by several specialised companies.

These included solar-powered sewage sludge drying systems presented by Nova Industries in partnership with Germany’s THERMO-SYSTEM. The technology helps reduce sludge moisture, volume and disposal costs.

The tour also included a presentation on the Robbiki industrial wastewater treatment plant, which handles wastewater from leather tanning operations.

For his part, Swailem said Egypt was expanding desalination, wastewater treatment and reuse, modernising irrigation systems and introducing digital technologies to manage its limited water resources.

Swailem stressed that advanced technologies and stronger private-sector partnerships were essential to maximising the use of available water resources.
