Israel’s military chief sought further discussions and formal approval before carrying out a reported operation against Iran, amid concerns it could rapidly escalate into a broader confrontation, Israeli broadcaster N12 News reported late on Sunday.
The report said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office had instructed Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir to proceed with the action. Security officials cited by N12 said it could trigger a swift escalation with Iran.
Zamir and other military leaders were also concerned the order could be politically motivated ahead of Israel’s elections, N12 reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Netanyahu denied the report late Sunday in an interview on Channel 14, saying there was “no confrontation.” He accused unnamed figures of trying to obscure Zamir’s own warning that Iran was seeking to interfere in the elections.
