Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty held separate meetings on Sunday with a galaxy of senior Iraqi officials, which tacked bilateral ties and regional developments.
During his meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi in Baghdad, Abdelatty conveyed President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s greetings to the Iraqi premier, referring to his upcoming visit to Cairo on November 23.
The two sides discussed ways to boost bilateral relations, expand co-operation and consult on regional developments and efforts to de-escalate tensions and promote regional security and stability, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nader Zaki said.
Abdelatty commended the Iraqi government’s efforts to consolidate domestic security and consolidate state authority and institutions.
The talks covered several regional issues of mutual interest. Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s efforts to complete the implementation of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan in all its phases, ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid and secure the continued Israeli withdrawal from the Strip.
He stressed the importance of a unified Arab position in addressing challenges facing efforts to achieve peace.
Abdelatty also met head of Iraq’s Progress (Taqaddum) Party Mohammed Al-Halbousi and stressed the importance of shielding Iraq from the repercussions of regional conflicts.
The Egyptian chief diplomat highlighted promising opportunities to expand economic and trade co-operation, increase the participation of Egyptian companies in infrastructure and reconstruction projects and advance trilateral co-operation between Egypt, Iraq and Jordan, particularly in electricity and oil interconnection projects.
During a third meeting with former Iraqi prime minister and head of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for Iraq’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national institutions, rejecting any interference in its internal affairs.
He praised his efforts to strengthen Egyptian-Iraqi relations during his tenure, particularly in the economic and trade fields.
Abdelatty stressed that Egypt views Iraq’s security and stability as a key pillar of the Arab national security system, given the historic ties and shared interests between the two brotherly countries.
