Palestine’s permanent representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Muhannad Al-Aklouk, praised Egypt’s historic and leading role in supporting the Palestinian cause, saying its political and diplomatic positions reflected a commitment to international law and resolutions, Arab national security and the implementation of Arab League decisions.
Al-Aklouk also commended Egypt’s strong diplomatic move to summon Colombia’s acting head of mission in Cairo and deliver a clear protest over Colombia’s opening of an embassy in Jerusalem, which he said violated international law and United Nations resolutions concerning the city’s legal status, MENA reported.
He said Egypt’s position was consistent with its historic support for the Palestinian cause and implemented Arab League decisions calling for Arab states to take political, diplomatic, economic and legal measures against any country that moves its embassy to Jerusalem.
The Arab League, meeting at the level of permanent representatives in an extraordinary session on October 13, called on member states of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation to summon Colombia’s ambassadors and protest the illegal opening of the embassy in Jerusalem, as well as its impact on bilateral relations with Colombia, Al-Aklouk said.
He expressed hope that all Arab and Muslim countries would take measures similar to Egypt’s, in line with international law and resolutions and Arab League decisions, to encourage Colombia to reverse its position and prevent other countries from taking the same step.
