Egypt’s Foreign Ministry summoned Colombia’s chargé d’affaires in Cairo to express Egypt’s strong protest and categorical rejection of Colombia’s opening of an embassy in occupied Jerusalem, an informed source said.
The move was a unilateral and unacceptable step that contravened the city’s existing legal and historical status and explicitly violated relevant international legitimacy resolutions, the source said, adding that it was null and void and had no legal effect.
The source said the summons also stressed that such irresponsible steps would have negative repercussions for international efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region and could fuel tensions, the Middle East News Agency reported.
The source underscored the need to respect occupied Jerusalem’s legal and historical status and refrain from unilateral measures that could undermine prospects for peace based on a two-state solution.
