Egypt’s Minister of Transport, Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir, has announced that passenger operations on the second phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project will begin on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in line with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives to accelerate mass transit projects within set timetables and expand modern, sustainable and environmentally-friendly transport.

In a statement issued by the Transport Ministry on Thursday, El-Wazir noted that the second phase extends from Field Marshal Tantawi Station to Sun Capital Station, comprising 16 stations, including Field Marshal Tantawi and Golf, which are already operational and serve New Cairo commuters

The phase also connects directly with the East Nile Monorail and integrates with the Field Marshal Tantawi Axis.

Once operational, the BRT network will cover 75 kilometres, from the Ring Road-Alexandria Agricultural Road intersection to Sun Capital, forming a major artery of Greater Cairo’s modern mass transit system.

The new phase includes Ain Sokhna Road, Maadi, Mokattam, Al-Jazair, Al-Imamain, Al-Zahraa, Al-Bahr Al-A‘zam, Al-Omraniya, Al-Talbiya, Al-Maryoutiya and Sun Capital stations, while Zahraa Maadi, Autostrad and Al-Mansouriya will open successively.

The minister described Sun Capital as a major integrated transport hub covering 80,000 square metres at the Ring Road-Fayoum Road intersection.

It includes a BRT charging and maintenance facility with 21 chargers, a SuperJet and passenger transport terminal serving Upper Egypt, an inter-city microbus terminal, an internal microbus stop, private-car parking, administrative buildings, maintenance facilities and commercial and service areas, the minister said.

He noted that the second phase follows strong public demand for the first phase, whose dedicated lanes have improved reliability and reduced journey times by limiting congestion-related disruption.

The project supports the ministry’s strategy of encouraging mass transit, reducing private-car use, cutting costs and emissions, improving traffic flow and protecting the environment. It uses locally manufactured electric buses, supporting sustainable transport and domestic manufacturing.

He added that the network links the Suez, Adly Mansour, El-Marg and Mostorod interchanges, connecting eastern and western Cairo with the New Administrative Capital. It integrates with Metro Line 1 at Al-Zahraa and Al-Marg, Metro Line 3 at Adly Mansour and Imbaba, the LRT at Adly Mansour, and the East Nile Monorail at Marshal Tantawi.

Serving New Cairo, Maadi, Mokattam, Omraniya, Talbiya, Maryoutiya, Mansouriya, Fayoum Road, Wahat Road and Ain Sokhna Road, the BRT was implemented as an alternative to the planned Metro Line 5.

Its stations incorporate parking and commercial facilities, supporting an integrated vision for mobility, urban development and future transport needs across Greater Cairo.
