Egyptian Ambassador to Italy and Permanent Representative to the UN organisations in Rome Bassam Rady presented Egypt’s efforts to support the work of UN agencies operating in the country during an expanded annual joint meeting of UN organisations in Rome.
The meeting was attended by more than 120 ambassadors and permanent representatives, as well as members of the executive boards of the participating UN organisations.
Rady outlined the components of the UN complex currently under construction in the Diplomatic District of Egypt’s New Capital.
The complex will host around 31 UN organisations and up to 3,000 employees, with shared facilities for meetings, services and infrastructure.
He described the project as an Egyptian initiative that offers a practical model for how a host country can support stronger co-operation among UN organisations.
He said the complex would promote joint analysis, co-ordinated planning and more integrated responses to humanitarian and development challenges.
Rady stressed that Egypt’s role as an important UN and humanitarian hub in the region has been strengthened by its hosting of a wide UN presence and several regional programmes, as well as its proximity to major regional crises.
He said the project goes beyond being a construction project, reflecting Egypt’s commitment to a more coordinated and effective UN presence.
Shared services and closer interaction among agencies would help improve co-ordination and cooperation at the country level, he added.
Rady invited ambassadors and members of UN organisations in Rome to visit Egypt’s New Capital, particularly the UN complex and the Diplomatic District.
