Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat held talks on Wednesday with Scatec Regional Director Mohamed Amer to review the latest developments in the operation of the Obelisk Solar Power Plant and its associated 200MWh energy storage facility.

They also reviewed progress on solar and wind projects with a combined capacity of 3.1GW and battery storage projects totalling 4GWh.

The meeting also covered the second phase of the Obelisk Solar Power Plant in Nag Hammadi, with a capacity of 500MW, following its connection to the national grid last week ahead of its official inauguration.

The first 500MW phase of the 1GW Obelisk solar plant was connected to the grid earlier this year as part of the ministry’s plan to bring new renewable energy capacity online in line with established timelines.

Esmat also reviewed progress on Scatec’s renewable energy and battery storage projects, including solar and wind projects with a combined capacity of 3.1GW and battery storage facilities totalling 4GWh in the Red Sea, Qena, Minya and Alexandria governorates.

He stressed the importance of accelerating project implementation and adhering to established completion and grid-connection schedules.

Esmat highlighted Scatec’s extensive international expertise in developing renewable energy projects and battery storage systems.

He also stressed that the private sector is a key partner in implementing Egypt’s electricity sector strategy, reaffirming the ministry’s support for its leading role in renewable energy projects.

Esmat underscored the importance of continuous monitoring and regular reviews of renewable energy projects, both operational facilities and those still under construction, to ensure timely grid connection.

The Ministry of Electricity is working to accelerate ongoing projects and introduce additional renewable energy capacity, with the aim of increasing the share of renewables in Egypt’s energy mix to 45 per cent by 2028, he said.

Scatec ASA is a Norwegian company which specialises in renewable energy systems.
