Deeping bilateral strategic co-operation and coordination positions on regional issues were at the core of talks held in Cairo on Sunday between the Egyptian and Eritrean top diplomats.
Receiving his Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh, Egypt’sForeign Minister Badr Abdel-Aati reaffirmed his country’s support for Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting the historic ties between the two nations, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tamim Khallaf said.
Abdel-Aati also lauded outcomes of recent bilateral visits, including President Isaias Afwerki’s trip to Egypt and the follow-up meetings in Asmara, which advanced cooperation in transport, trade, and investment.
He also emphasised opportunities for expanding trade and joint investments, encouraging Egyptian private sector participation in Eritrea’s priority sectors such as mining, infrastructure, maritime transport, pharmaceuticals, fisheries, housing, and capacity-building programs through Egypt’s Agency for Partnership for Development, Khallaf added.
On security in the Red Sea, the two ministers stressed that safeguarding and managing the waterway is the exclusive responsibility of its littoral states, rejecting attempts by non-coastal actors to impose security arrangements or gain access in violation of international law.
Abdel-Aati and Saleh also exchanged views on developments in the Horn of Africa, as the Egyptian foreign minister outlined Cairo’s position on Sudan and Somalia, underscoring the need to preserve state institutions, unity, and sovereignty across the region, while rejecting unilateral measures that could undermine stability.
