President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reshuffled his wartime government, prompting hundreds of Ukrainians to take to the streets on Thursday to protest the removal of his young defence minister. This minister, regarded as an innovator in the country’s successful drone technology, had clashed with the traditional military establishment.

The personnel overhaul, which involved replacing his prime minister, could be a test of Zelenskyy’s political authority as Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s military operation approaches its fourth and a half-year mark. Despite the prohibition of wartime elections, Zelenskyy has remained in office under martial law and has periodically reshuffled his government.

These moves have thrown Ukraine’s military leadership into an unwelcome crisis just as its actions against Russia were beginning to yield results. This comes against the backdrop of Moscow’s relentless aerial attacks. Overnight, Russian missiles struck the capital of Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuries to five others, including a child, as reported by Ukraine’s Emergency Service.

Zelenskyy attributed the friction between outgoing Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander of Ukraine’s armed forces, to unresolved issues.

At a news conference, Zelenskyy asserted that if the parties fail to resolve a problem, he will take matters into his own hands.

Fedorov, a 35-year-old vigorous moderniser, is recognized for his technological expertise, which has contributed significantly to Ukraine’s recent military success against Russia’s larger army. Despite his accomplishments, he is leaving the government after only six months in office.

During a news conference, Fedorov appeared in a dark T-shirt and jeans and accused Syrskyi of obstructing necessary reforms due to the “complete transformation” of the war landscape, driven by advancements in technology such as drones.

Throughout his tenure, Fedorov successfully implemented restrictions on Russian forces’ access to the Starlink satellite communications system. This move enabled Ukraine to effectively utilize its midrange strike capabilities, providing Kyiv with substantial battlefield advantages.

Fedorov expressed his willingness to collaborate with Syrskyi, but he highlighted the challenges they faced when all the initiatives they proposed were blocked.
