The Cabinet’s Media Centre has issued a statement refuting claims circulating on social media that Egypt has reduced the cultivation of strategic crops and scaled back its efforts to achieve food security.
After consulting the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, the centre confirmed that the claims are false. The ministry stressed that the state continues to expand the cultivation of strategic crops to strengthen food security and increase self-sufficiency, while closely monitoring cultivated areas and taking measures to improve productivity.
According to official figures, wheat cultivation has risen to 3.7 million feddans this season, up from 3.1 million last year. Rice cultivation is determined annually through joint decisions by the Ministries of Water Resources and Irrigation and Agriculture, with the current allocation set at around 1.07 million feddans. Cotton cultivation has exceeded 190,000 feddans, according to preliminary surveys, with final figures expected later this month.
The ministry highlighted its efforts to introduce new crop varieties that require less water and deliver higher yields, alongside awareness programmes to encourage farmers to adopt modern agricultural practices and maximise productivity.
The Media Centre urged the public not to be misled by inaccurate information circulating online and to rely on official sources for updates on Egypt’s agricultural strategy.
