Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aati held a phone call on Saturday with Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

During the call, the two sides discussed regional developments and key issues related to nuclear non-proliferation.

According to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tamim Khallaf, the two sides reviewed the outcome of the eleventh Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which was held in New York from April 27 to May 22.

During the call, Abdel-Aati expressed disappointment over the conference’s failure to reach consensus on a final outcome document. He stressed that the outcomes of previous review conferences remain valid, particularly the 1995 resolution calling for the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

The foreign minister underscored the central importance of the NPT as the cornerstone of the global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime, highlightuing its role in promoting international peace and security. He also stressed the need to achieve the treaty’s universality, especially in the Middle East.

The discussion also addressed developments in the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran, as well as efforts to reach an agreement that takes into account the concerns of all parties.

Abdel-AAti stressed the importance of intensifying diplomatic efforts and supporting initiatives aimed at achieving mutually acceptable understandings between Washington and Tehran, noting that such progress would help reduce tensions, prevent escalation, and strengthen regional and international security and stability.
