Egypt has maintained its status as measles- and rubella-free for 2024, marking the third consecutive year since its initial verification in 2022, the Ministry of Health and Population announced.

Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar received an official letter from regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Eastern Mediterranean Hanan Balkhy, confirming the decision of the Regional Verification Commission, which unanimously endorsed Egypt’s continued elimination status following a comprehensive review of epidemiological data and the national report submitted by Egypt.

The decision was taken during the commission’s meeting held in Cairo in December 2025.

The health ministry said the renewal reflects the strength of Egypt’s health system and its capacity to protect current and future generations from vaccine-preventable diseases, highlighting the efficiency of the expanded immunization program and the robustness of the epidemiological surveillance system.

WHO also commended Egypt’s sustained achievement, citing remarkable improvements in outbreak examinations and source identification, and affirmed its continued technical support to the Egyptian health sector.
