Egypt renewed its call for a nuclear weapon-free Middle East, stressing the importance of universal adherence to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and placing all regional nuclear facilities under full safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In a statement ahead of the IAEA General Conference (Sept 15–19) on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry called for consistent international standards to ensure transparency and prevent regional escalation, saying selective approaches to nuclear oversight only increase tensions.

Egypt added that removing all nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction from the region remains essential for regional and global stability, and warned that the continued presence of nuclear weapons poses a serious threat to humanity.

Cairo reaffirmed its support for disarmament efforts, recalling its 1974 initiative at the United Nations to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East.

It also pointed to the 1995 resolution from the NPT Review and Extension Conference, describing it as a binding commitment tied to the treaty’s indefinite extension.

Finally, the statement called on the international community to take serious steps toward eliminating nuclear weapons and to implement the NPT’s disarmament pillar in full.
