Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi made a tour on Friday of a number of infrastructure and road projects in eastern Cairo.

The president’s tour took him to the site of a project for linking the Shinzo Abe road axis with the Fifth Settlement, an urban community in eastern Cairo.

The road axis will be connected with the community through a new flyover now under construction.

The bridge will be named after Egypt’s late comedian Samir Ghanem who died in May this year.

President Sisi decided to call the flyover after Ghanem to commemorate his memory and in recognition of his record as a comedian over the past six decades.

The Samir Ghanem flyover will be a new traffic artery that connects the suburbs of eastern Cairo with those in New Cairo and Heliopolis, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.

He added that the new flyover would also cut short travel time between the two areas and reduce the density of traffic on the Cairo-Suez road axis.

President Sisi also inspected the ongoing upgrade of the Autostrad road in the area between the Cairo International Airport flyover and the Field Marshal Abu Ghazala flyover.

Ambassador Radi said the upgraded Autostrad would have 2 seven-lane carriageways.

He said President Sisi chatted with engineers overseeing the upgrade of the road and listened to an explanation from them about upgrade implementation rate.

The president underlined the importance of the technical efficiency of the new road axis and flyovers.

They have to accommodate traffic in the areas where they are constructed and cut journey times, the president said.

The president also underscored the importance of the new road axes and flyovers shortening travel times between Cairo and new urban communities on the outskirts of the Egyptian capital, Ambassador Radi said.

He added that the president also directed executive engineers on the sites to abide by quality standards and the timetables of the projects on which they are working.
