New chief for FASU

The Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) has a new president.

Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi won the presidency by 20 votes. His competitor, the former federation chairman, garnered only three votes in the election held in South Africa.

FASU is the governing body of university sport in Africa. It was founded in 1971 by ten African countries to develop sports in African universities. Egypt’s leadership of FASU will be to the benefit of countries of the continent for university sports, the minister said.

Egypt will be in a position to pass on expertise in organising sporting events in Africa, while strengthening ties between Egypt and FASU members, the minister added.

Sobhi stressed the importance of strengthening partnership between Egypt and FASU in supporting development of spots at tertiary level.
