The USS Theodore Roosevelt has arrived in Singapore for a stopover before heading to the Middle East, where it is expected to join two other US aircraft carrier strike groups, according to the account provided.
The carrier moored at Changi Naval Base shortly before midnight Eastern Time. It is expected to spend several days in Singapore before sailing through the Strait of Malacca towards the US Central Command area of operations, a journey that could take one to two weeks.
A US official told Axios that the strike group would not arrive in the region before mid-November.
The deployment comes amid heightened tensions with Iran. The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States carried out strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island on Monday, citing US officials who described them as defensive and reactive.
The newspaper said the strikes were the latest in a series of limited operations carried out without public announcement in recent weeks. President Donald Trump told Fox on Tuesday that it was “just a minor attack” on a recently built “anti-aircraft facility”.
The Theodore Roosevelt strike group completed the multinational Keen Sword 27 exercise on October 29. The carrier is accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Chosin and the destroyers USS Paul Hamilton and USS Decatur.
