Two tankers caught fire and were halted south of the Strait of Hormuz after hitting Iranian mines, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards navy said in a statement carried by state media on Tuesday.
The statement also said Iran had downed a US drone on Monday night.
Diplomatic efforts between Iran and the United States have stalled over issues including the future of the strait.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Monday that Washington was responsible for insecurity in the waterway, a key route for oil and gas shipments that Iran has sought to blockade during a war launched by the United States and Israel in February.
Pakistan has played a key mediating role in unsuccessful efforts to end the war. In June, it helped broker a short-lived memorandum of understanding that Tehran insists should remain the basis for any peace deal.
