Donald Trump is marking his 80th birthday by hosting seven mixed martial arts bouts on Sunday in a custom-built arena on the White House South Lawn, a dramatic display that underscores his unconventional approach at a turbulent point in his presidency.

Seventeen months into his second term, Trump has regularly stretched presidential norms to draw attention and project authority. His newest platform is the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Octagon—an eight-sided cage set up within view of his White House bedroom for an event titled “UFC Freedom 250,” a nod to next month’s 250th anniversary of America’s founding.

The spectacle comes as Trump confronts the ongoing four‑month war with Iran, which has driven consumer prices to their highest level in three years and rattled voters, according to public polls. It also coincides with his birthday and his efforts to push back against perceptions that he is slipping into lame-duck status.

Trump plans to watch 14 fighters from five countries compete before an anticipated crowd of 4,000 inside a temporary 92‑foot‑tall venue dubbed “The Claw.” The main event—a potential five‑round fight—features UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria facing former interim titleholder Justin Gaethje. The bouts are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. (0000 GMT Monday).

Tickets were not sold to the public. According to someone familiar with the arrangement, UFC offered some seats to guests contributing more than $1 million. The Trump administration says one-quarter of the audience will consist of military service members.

To stage the private event on federal property, Trump invoked broad executive authority, defying long‑standing norms and prompting a legal challenge over potential costs and ethical concerns. The UFC’s parent company, TKO Group Holdings, is publicly traded.

A Reuters/Ipsos online poll of 4,531 U.S. adults conducted June 3‑8 found that only 16% believed hosting the event was appropriate. On Friday, a judge declined to block the spectacle in a lawsuit arguing that the administration had overreached, including by not seeking congressional approval.

Trump has long maintained close ties with UFC CEO Dana White and with the Ellison family, whose company Paramount holds a $7.7 billion broadcast deal for UFC through 2033. White has leveraged the sport’s popularity, especially among young men, to support Trump’s political campaigns since 2016.

UFC has said it spent more than $60 million on the event and does not expect to profit from it.
