A fire aboard a subway maintenance train in Lower Manhattan Tuesday injured 14 people and disrupted service on a major line during the morning commute, authorities said.
The blaze broke out shortly after 2 a.m. at Astor Place station on a vacuum train used to clear debris from subway tracks, the New York Fire Department said.
Eight of those injured were Metropolitan Transportation Authority workers and six were firefighters. Most injuries were minor, although two people suffered moderate but non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control at about 5:30 a.m. The cause remained unclear.
Service on the Lexington Avenue line, used by the 4, 5 and 6 trains, was suspended for several hours between Grand Central and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, the MTA said.
The line had reopened by around 7 a.m., but with severe delays, the agency said.
