Palestinians face perilous journeys for food in Gaza 12 - Egyptian Gazette

Gaza, Palestine – A dire humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Gaza, where Palestinians are risking their lives daily in a desperate search for food. With essential supplies scarce, residents navigate perilous routes, facing gunfire, theft, and a pervasive sense of lawlessness in their struggle to feed their families.

Each day, a deadly gauntlet awaits those attempting to reach food distribution points. Israeli troops reportedly open fire on crowds crossing military zones, while knife-wielding thieves prey on those who manage to secure aid. This escalating chaos forces Palestinians into a brutal competition for survival.

Jamil Atili, a father of 13, recounted a harrowing experience returning from a food center operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israeli-backed private contractor. Despite suffering a knife cut to his cheek and being pepper-sprayed by a guard, Atili returned empty-handed. “This isn’t aid. It’s humiliation. It’s death,” he stated, his voice laced with despair. “I have nothing to feed my children. My heart is broken.”

Israel began allowing limited food supplies into Gaza this past month after a 10-week complete cutoff. However, United Nations officials warn the aid is insufficient to avert widespread starvation. The majority of these supplies are directed to GHF, which operates four distribution points within Israeli military zones, while only a trickle reaches the U.N. and other humanitarian organizations.

Both aid distribution systems are plagued by chaos. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, daily gunfire by Israeli troops towards crowds on roads leading to GHF centers has resulted in hundreds of deaths and injuries in recent weeks. Concurrently, U.N. truck convoys are frequently overwhelmed and stripped of supplies by hungry crowds. Witnesses report that Israeli troops have fired to disperse these crowds, with more than 50 people reportedly killed on Tuesday alone near military zones, an incident the Israeli military states it is investigating.

Olga Cherevko, spokesperson for the U.N. humanitarian affairs office, described the situation as “apocalyptic,” lamenting that “somehow it does get worse.”

The Israeli military maintains that it only fires warning shots at individuals approaching its forces along the roads to GHF food centers. However, Palestinian witnesses describe heavy barrages from tanks, snipers, drones, and even crane-mounted guns, asserting that troops fire to prevent crowds from advancing beyond designated points or for straying from military-defined roads. The military, when questioned about crowd control measures, stated its “operational conduct…is accompanied by systematic learning processes” and is exploring safety measures such as fences and road signs.

GHF, for its part, denies any shootings occurring at or near its hubs. A spokesperson, speaking anonymously, attributed incidents to aid-seekers moving “during prohibited times… or trying to take a short cut” before sites open. GHF is reportedly working to improve safety, including adjusting opening times to daylight hours.

Israel’s stated intention is for GHF to replace the U.N.-led aid network in Gaza, claiming that Hamas diverts significant amounts of U.N. aid. The U.N. vehemently denies this accusation.

The situation in Gaza remains fluid and highly challenging. What further information or aspects of this crisis would you like to explore?
