Jailed Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi was in critical condition in a cardiac care unit in northwestern Iran on Sunday, two days after she was brought to hospital from prison, a foundation run by her family said.
Mohammadi’s blood pressure has continued to fluctuate dangerously, and treatment has been limited to efforts to stabilise her condition through oxygen therapy, the Narges Mohammadi Foundation said in a statement.
She was transferred from prison to hospital in the northwestern city of Zanjan on Friday following a “catastrophic deterioration” of her health, which the foundation said included two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis.
Mohammadi, who is in her 50s, won the Nobel Peace Prize while in prison for a campaign to advance women’s rights and abolish the death penalty in Iran. She suffered a suspected heart attack in late March, her family said.
“Effective treatment for Narges Mohammadi’s conditions is only possible if she is transferred to her medical team in Tehran,” the foundation said in its Sunday statement.
