Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated on Thursday that Lebanon will not withdraw from ongoing negotiations with Israel, despite mounting pressure, and will continue the talks to secure outcomes that serve the country’s interests.
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, Aoun said: “Despite the pressure to withdraw from the negotiations, we will not do so. We will continue on this path until we reach conclusions that serve our nation.”
He described the negotiations as the only viable option amid war and destruction, stressing that the state remains the guarantor of national unity, sovereignty, and the protection of all Lebanese citizens. Aoun added that the talks do not violate Lebanon’s constitution and are aimed at safeguarding the country’s interests and its people’s future. He urged critics to await the results before passing judgment.
On June 6, Aoun said the negotiations represent the safest path to protect Lebanon, arguing that dialogue is not surrender or concession, but the least costly way to end wars and prevent further human and economic losses.
Lebanon and Israel have held three rounds of U.S.-mediated talks in Washington in April and May.
